ON A SNOWY EVENING IN COLORADO SPRINGS

From: AN INTERRUPTED LIFE - DIARIES 1941 - 1943 by ETTY HILLESUM

Born Jan 1914 Holland. Died Auschwitz 30th November 1943

'A desire to kneel sometimes pulses through my body... It is as if my body had been meant for the act of kneeling. Is there anything as intimate as man's relationship with God?'

'I repose in myself. And that part in which I repose I call God.'

'Somewhere, deep inside, all of us carry a vast and fruitful loneliness wherever we go. Sometimes the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two breaths, or the turning inwards in prayer for five short minutes.'

'There is really a deep well inside me and in it dwells God. Sometimes I am there too, but often stones and grit block the well and God is buried beneath. The He must be dug out again.'
